Paranoia as an Ontological Atavism:
Channeling the Conflict Impulse through an Evolutionary

Author: Andrii Myshko

Abstract

In the Meta-Monist framework, persecutory paranoid delusion is not merely a symptom of schizophrenia but an ontological atavism — the activation of an archaic, evolutionarily conserved Self-Transformation mechanism () to discharge a critical Gradient of Tension (∇U). This mechanism, adaptive for primitive survival, becomes pathological when deployed to process complex, abstract conflicts of self-definition. Schizophrenia is read as a catalogue of pathological patterns: positive symptoms are atavistic channelings of energy Δψ, while negative symptoms instantiate an ontological apoptosis of the subject.

1. The Functional Role of the Negation Modus (-A'_0) in Evolution

Within Meta-Monism, the Modus -A'_0 (Negation, Otherness) is the source of risk, complexity, and therefore development. In survival psychology, -A'_0 was directly linked to physical threat: predators, environmental hazards, enemies.

Adaptive task: the mind needed a fast, energy-efficient way to transform high Δψ (risk of death) into action that reduced it (survival).

Evolutionary (archaic): the most effective self-transformation for survival was avoidance and hypervigilance:

  1. Threat detection: hear a twig snap (-A'_0) → interpret as predator;
  2. Channeling Δψ: immediately mobilize energy to flee or hide;
  3. Outcome: Δψ falls after action; identity (A') is restored in safety.

This pattern became fixed as the most powerful evolutionary channel for discharging tension.

2. Positive and Negative Symptoms as a Crisis

The debut crisis of schizophrenia (ages ~15–25) occurs when the required gradient ∇Urequired sharply exceeds an individual’s Power of Transformation (P_{Tψ}). When the apparatus of P_{Tψ} fails, energy Δψ is channeled pathologically in two main ways: active atavism (positive symptoms) and passive annihilation (negative symptoms).

A. Paranoid Delusion as an Archaic Avoidance Pattern

Persecutory delusion is not pure chaos but a structured attempt to impose order. It performs two pathological yet structurally calming functions:

  • Explanation of ∇U: unbearable inner tension, anxiety, and cognitive dissonance are explained by an external, comprehensible cause (“they are after me”). This temporarily restores a false coherence of A' (I am a coherent object; I am a victim).
  • Activation of : paranoia returns the subject to a familiar, primitive evolutionary . Instead of engaging in complex self-reflection (which is blocked), the subject performs simple avoidance acts (hiding, watching). Δψ is discharged through this activity, preventing a full volitional and emotional collapse (the negative pole).

B. Hallucinations as Regression to Pre-object A'

Hallucinations—especially auditory—can be interpreted as a regression in perceptual organization toward early stages of ψ' formation:

  1. Early reality: at primitive developmental stages, external reality is not fully separated from internal impulses (A'); internal experiences may appear as external objects.
  2. Breakdown of distinction: when P_{Tψ} fails, the function that discriminates between A' (internal voice) and -A'_0 (external world) collapses. Δψ leads to hypertrophy of A', which is projected outward.
  3. Ontological atavism: instead of processing conflict via language and reflection, the psyche uses a primitive perceptual channel—“hearing” or “seeing” its unintegrated parts. Hallucinations are untransformed fragments of A' perceived as external -A'_0, a fallback to pre-object, pre-logical .

C. Grandiose Delusions as Ego-Affirmation Hypertrophy (Hierarchical Atavism)

Grandiosity mobilizes an archaic pattern—absolute affirmation of A' via demonstrative dominance:

  • Ego stress (-A'_0): existential hit to A' triggered by failure to meet social demands (∇U).
  • Archaic pattern (dominance): the simplest evolutionary method to restore A' is to display dominance—a social shortcut that reasserts rank within a group. Grandiose delusion is a hypertrophic negation of -A'_0 where the subject rejects the legitimacy of social ∇U and proclaims higher rank.
  • Function: compensatory . Grandiosity artificially zeros ∇U by imposing a primary dictatorship of the self over reality.

D. Negative Symptomatology as Ontological Apoptosis

Unlike positive symptoms (active though pathological ), negative symptoms (apathy, anhedonia, social withdrawal) are an attempt at self-annihilation of subjective reality (ψ') in order to preserve Being.

  1. Unbearable ∇U: when gradient of tension becomes critical and P_{Tψ} is exhausted, the system treats continued self-distinction () as lethal.
  2. Ontological apoptosis: the subject initiates a programmed collapse of active selfhood, manifested as:
    • abulia and apathy — refusal of goal-directed transformation and emotional response;
    • social isolation — withdrawal from -A'_0 (external reality) to avoid fresh Δψ;
    • goal — artificial resetting of ∇U by reverting ψ' toward a minimally differentiated, near-static being.
  3. Pathology: unlike cellular apoptosis, ontological apoptosis cannot remove the subject; it leaves a “living death”: biological function remains while subjective reality is collapsed to a minimum, a pathological denial of the ontological duty to self-transformation.

3. Therapy as Disabling the Atavism

The therapeutic aim, from this vantage, is to block maladaptive channels and redirect Δψ into productive, contemporary :

  • Antipsychotics: reduce the overall potency of Δψ and sensitivity to -A'_0, thereby damping resonance with archaic patterns (paranoia, hallucinations, grandiosity) and lowering the drive toward ontological apoptosis.
  • Psychotherapy & rehabilitation: gradually build new, complex channels for P_{Tψ}. Patients are trained to recognize and transform internal tension (abstract -A'_0) without projecting it outward.
  • Micro-: each small victory over isolation or completion of a simple task creates a new, non-atavistic pathway to process Δψ.

Conclusion

In this model, schizophrenia is a catalogue of ontological atavisms and apoptotic breakdowns. When complex mechanisms of self-transformation fail, the psyche instinctively reverts to inherited survival programs. The tragedy is that what once saved our ancestor or a biological cell now destroys the modern personality, preventing it from fulfilling the ontological duty to complicate and develop its Reality through authentic .
